Virginia Bottomley Bio
Virginia Hilda Brunette Maxwell Bottomley is also known as Baroness Bottomley of Nettlestone. She is a British Conservative Party politician and headhunter. From 1984 to 2005, she was a Member of Parliament in the House of Commons and was raised to the peerage in 2005.
She was born on 12 March 1948 in Dunoon, Scotland. Currently, she is 73 years old as of 2021.
Family and Education
She was born to Barbara Rutherford Smith and W. John Garnett. Her mother was a teacher and elected Conservative member of the Inner London Education Authority while his father was a former director of the Industrial Society and grandson of physicist and educational advisor William Garnett.
She completed her schooling at Putney High School in Southwest London. After that, she joined the University of Essex to study sociology BA. Then she graduated from the London School of Economics with a degree of Masters of Arts MA. After that, she began working as a social scientist, researcher for Child Poverty Action Group, social worker, magistrate, and Chairman of the Inner London Juvenile Court.

Personal Life
She married Sir Peter Bottomley in 1967. She met her husband when she was 12 years old. After the birth of their eldest child, since 1975 her husband has been an MP.
Her family includes many political and public figures. Her cousins include Peter Jay, the former British Ambassador to the United States, and Lord Hunt of Chesterton, the father of historian and former Labour MP Tristram Hunt. Career
In 1988, she received her first ministerial position as a Parliamentary Under-Secretary at the Department of the Environment, and later in 1989, she was appointed as Minister of State at the Department of Health. In 1992, she was appointed a member of the Privy Council on joining John Major’s cabinet as Secretary of State for Health and she became the ninth woman to serve in the British cabinet. Then until 1995, she served as Health secretary. From 1995 to 1997, she served as Secretary of State for National heritage.
At the time of the 2005 general election, she retired from the House of Commons. And in June 2005, she created a life peer with the title ‘Barrenness Bottomley of Nettlestone’.
