Margaret Beckett Bio

Dame Margaret Mary Beckett is one of the British politicians who has been working as a Member of Parliament for Derby South since 1983. She was a member of the Labour Party and became the first female Foreign Secretary of Britain in 2006. She served in the cabinet of Prime Minister Tony Blair throughout his term of office. From 1992 to 1994, she served as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition and acting Leader of the Labour Party.

She was born on 15 January 1943 in Ashton- under-Lyne, Lancashire, England. Currently, she is 78 years old as of 2021.

Early Life and Education

She was born as Margaret Mary Jackson into a family of an invalid Congregationalist carpenter father and an Irish Catholic teacher mother. Her father died early and their family led to poverty. She had two sisters, one of which later became a nun and the other later became a doctor and mother of three.

She completed her schooling at Notre Dame High School for Girls in Norwich. Then she joined the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology from where she took a degree in metallurgy and there she was also an active member of the Students Union and Council.

In 1961, she joined Associated Electrical Industries as a student apprentice in metallurgy for further training. Then in 1964, she joined the Transport and General Workers Union and in 1966, she joined the University of Manchester as an experiment officer. In 1970, she started working for the Labour Party as a researcher in industrial policy.

Personal Life

In August 1979, she married Lionel Beckett who was the chairman of her local Constituency Labour Party. Then she appointed her husband as her office manager at a salary up to £30,000. But as she employed her family members, she has been criticized by some media people that it promotes nepotism. She has two sons and three grandchildren. She enjoyed caravan holidays with her husband throughout her political career. Recently, her husband died in 2021.

In 1993, she was appointed by the Privy Council of the United Kingdom and they gave her the honorific title ‘The Right Honorable’ for life

In the 2013 New Year Honors, she was made a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the Civil Division and they gave her the honorific title Dame and the post-nominal letters ‘DBE’ for life.

Then in 2017, she was awarded the honorary degree of Doctor of University from the University of Derby.
