Clare Short Bio

Clare Short is a British politician who served as a Secretary of State for International Development. She worked under Prime Minister Tony Blair from 1997 to 2003. She was born on 15 February 1946 in Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. She is currently 75 years old as of 2021.

Early Life

She was born to Irish Catholic parents who belonged from County Armagh, Northern Ireland.She married a man named Keele University when she was 18 years old, and they had a child when she was 17, thus their kid was given up for adoption. He didn’t make contact with his mother until 1996 but after that, she got to know that her son Toby was a conservative supporter who served as a solicitor in the city of London and also that she became a grandmother to his three children.

Education and Career Beginning

She completed her degree in Political Science from the University of Leeds and became a Civil Servant who worked for the Home Office. She worked as a Private Secretary to the Conservative Minister Mark Carlisle who supported her and said that she could do better. Then at the 1983 general election, she was elected as MP for Birmingham Ladywood constituency.

Personal Life

In 1981, she married Alex Lyon was a Labour MP and Minister with whom she had worked whilst at the Home Office. After 2 years of marriage, she was elected in Birmingham Ladywood but on the same day, her husband lost his seat.

Her paternal cousin is a Canadian actor named Martin Short.

Parliamentary Career

From 1983 to 2010, She was a member of Parliament for Birmingham Lady wood. For a most period of her life, she was a Lab our party MP. In 2006, she resigned the party whip and served the remainder of her term as an independent. She did not contest at the 2010 general election but shortly before her retirement, she was strongly criticized by members of the Labour party when she announced her support for a hung parliament.

In May 2008, she gave a lecture as a part of Ebor lectures 2008 series which was titled ‘Apocalypse Now- Global Equity and Sustainable Living, the preconditions for Human Survival’. In that lecture, she spoke of the need to end the ‘throw-away society. According to her, she believed in the changing conception of the world since the 1960s and told the need for us to realize the consequences of today’s environmental concerns for the generations of the future.

Then in March 2011, she was contested as chairman of Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) at the EITI Global Conference in Paris.

Award

She received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the University of Ulster in June 2009 for her contributions to international development.
