Kate Hoey Bio

Kate Hoey’s full name is Catherine Letitia Hoey, Baroness Hoey but she is better known as Kate Hoey. She is a life peer and a Northern Irish politician who served as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Home Affairs from 1998 to 1999. She was also the Minister of Sport from 1999 to 2001. She was also a member of the Labour Party from 1989 to 2019, serving as the Member of Parliament for Vauxhall.

She was born on 21 June 1946 in Mallusk, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. She is currently 75 years old as of 2021.

Education

She completed her schooling at Belfast Royal Academy and then joined Ulster College of Physical Education. She holds a degree in Economics which she earned from London Guildhall University. She was also a vice president of the National Union of Students.

Sport

Kate Hoey has a great interest in the sport. In 1966, she was the Northern Ireland high jump champion and she has also worked for football clubs including Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Queens Park Rangers, Chelsea, and Brentford and there she worked as an educational advisor. Also, she was an educational advisor to Arsenal FC from 1985 to 1989 before entering parliament.

Political Career

During the mid-1970s, she was one of the early members of the Newtownabbey Lab our party. In 1989, she contested at the Vauxhall by-election which was precipitated by the resignation of Stuart Holland. She got only one nomination but the National Executive Committee did not want to select Osamor who had the most nominations so the NEC made a list but when the local party refused to choose from the list and then she was imposed by the NEC as the Lab our candidate.

She held many Government and parliamentary positions throughout her life. She was the Member of Parliament for Vauxhall from 1989 to 2019. She was the opposition spokesperson, citizen’s charter, and women from 1992 to 1993. She served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to Frank Field as Minister of State for Welfare Reform in the Department of Social Security from 1997 to 1998. She also served as the Parliamentary undersecretary of State for the Home Office from 1998 to 1999. She also worked as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport as Minister for Sports from 1999 to 2001. She was the chair of the Northern Ireland Affairs Select Committee in 2019. presently she is a member of the House of Lords in 2020 and 2021, she is Prime Ministerial Trade Envoy to Ghana.
