Subhashini Ali is an Indian costume designer, politician, and a member of the Communist Party of India. She is the President of the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA). Subhashini Ali Biography and Family Background

Subhashini Ali is the daughter of Captain Lakshmi Swaminathan and Colonel Prem Sehgal, they were a part of the Indian National Army. Subhashini completed her early education at Welham Girls’ School in Dehradun. After that, she did her bachelor’s degree from Women’s Christian College in Madras. And completed her Masters from Kanpur University.

Later on, she was married to Muzaffar Ali, a filmmaker. She has a son named Shaad Ali. He is also a filmmaker. He has directed films like Saathiya, Bunty Aur Babli, and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom.

Subhashini Ali is a communist and an atheist, and she taught her son to be an atheist. Subhashini married her son Shahz neen Hussian but divorced him soon after.

Subhashini Ali: Unionist and a Leader

As a trade Unionist & a leader of AIDWA, she was once very influential in Kanpur politics. In Kanpur, the Communist Party of India held sway over the trade unions. The CPI supported S.M Banerjee and elected him for Lok Sabha. He won four times from 1957 to 1971. This influence of the Communist Party of India helped her to win the General election in 1989 to the parliament. Subhashini Ali defeated the BJP candidate with 56,587 votes from Kanpur. However, the CPI influence waned when the emergency was held in the year 1977. Thereafter, Subhashini lost the General elections.

After that, she was elected several times but lost. Subhashini is currently a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of India (CCCPI). Her journey took her to the polit bureau (PB) of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in the year 2015 and she became the second women member after Brinda Karat In PB.

Subhashini Worked in Films as Period Costume Designer

A 1981 classic, Umrao Jaan was directed by her husband filmmaker Muzaffar Ali. Subhashini Ali designed period costumes for the actors. However, she has acting skills as well. In 2001, she acted in Asoka. In 2002, she acted in an English film named “The Guru” and was seen in a film called “Amu” with her fellow party member, Brinda Karat in 2005.

The film called “Anju man” in 1986 was inspired by Subhashini’s struggles in Kanpur when she was trying to get elected in AIDWA. The movie was directed by Muzaffar Ali, her husband.
