Principles of Morena

The National Regeneration Movement party describes itself as a democratic left-wing party that supports ethnic, religious, cultural, and sexual diversity, respect for human rights, and environmental care. The party identifies itself as an opponent to the neoliberal economic policies which Mexico began adopting in the 1980s. According to Morena, a new economic model is required after the failures of neoliberalism in Mexico as it has increased corruption and inequality. The party favors development through private and social businesses, promoting market competition but exercising State responsibility in the strategic activities which the Constitution States. And it also proposes a model which strengthens the inner market fair wages. A model that promotes syndical freedom and democracy and the state does not interfere in the inner affairs of the trade organizations.

The party also sets up to stop the privatization of Permex and the granting of plants to foreign mining companies as they devast the lands and pay no taxes and harm the environment as well. Moreover, the party also declared that they are in favor of improving the conditions of the indigenous peoples of Mexico. The party is against the monopolization of the mass media especially television by Televisa and TV Azteca.

Unlike other parties in Mexico, Morena has not sought to reduce inequality by increasing taxes on the wealthy people but instead, the party has focused on reducing the pay gap which is between lower-level employees and higher-level government workers’ salaries so they reduced the salary of higher-ranking public officials.

The pragmatism of the Party

Morena has been described as “not in the strict sense a political party, but an alliance of diverse movements and political actors whose main reference is its founder and presidential candidate Andrés Manuel López Obrador” by various outlets. Due to the pragmatism of AMLO, some critics have said that the party is subject to the decisions of Obrador rather than having a more consistent ideology as a party. In 2018, an article was written in a magazine named Clarín that describes that position of Morena as “oscillating between populism and social democracy”.
