Birth of Akbar Jehan

Akbar Jehan was the daughter of Michael Harry Nedou, who was the eldest son of a European owner of an Indian hotel chain. He married a Kashmiri girl named Mirjan. Akbar Jehan was born in 1907. Her father launched Nedous Hotel in Srinagar and was the proprietor of a hotel at the tourist resort named Gulmarg. Akbar Jehan married Abdullah Sheikh in the year 1933.

Akbar Jehan died in the year 2000. She has a son named Farooq Abdullah. Her family lineage includes Omar Abdullah, Sara Pilot, Safia Abdullah (grandchildren), Zahir Abdullah, Aaran Pilot, Vehaan Pilot, Zamir Abdullah (great-grandchildren)

Begum Akbar Jehan Abdullah’s Political Career

Begum Akbar Jehan Abdullah served as a member of the 6th and 8th Lok Sabha from 1977 to 1979. After that she served from 1984 to 1979, representing her state, Kashmir’s Srinagar and Anantnag constituencies.

She had earned the name of being the first President of the Jammu and Kashmir Red Cross Society from 1947 to 1951.

Apart from this, she also served as Chairman of the State Level Committee of the International Year of Women in 1975. She was the President of all India Family Welfare Association, State Brand in the year 1976 and also was an All India Women’s Conference, State Branch in the year 1977.

Akbar Jehan’s Family History

Akbar Jehan’s father, Michael Harry Nedou, and his family emigrated from Dubrovnik, Croatian city, on the Dalmatian coast of the Adriatic Sea to Lahore in the year 1800. Croatia is now an independent country. However, from 1815-1918, it was part of the Austrian Empire and from 1918 to 1991, it was a part of Yugoslavia.

According to Akbar Jehan’s family sources, her paternal grandfather, Michael Adam Nedou began his career as a photographer and architect. But his destiny had something else and the decisions he took had shaped his life and legacy. He started his first venture as a hotelier. Michael Adam Nedou named his first hotel, Sind Punjab Hotel, which was in the port of Karachi. He then built a courtly Nedous’s Hotel in Lahore.

Thereafter, he and his family built the Nedous Hotel in Gulmarg, Kashmir in the year 1888. The hotel is built in height, overshadowing the luxuriantly lush meadow, flowers. There are cozy cottages around the main lounge and a lot of other things.

Akbar Jehan’s mother, Mirjan was respectfully called Raji jee by friends, family, and acquaintances. She was from a Gujjar family and her family lineage was from the traditional Rajputs of Rajasthan.
